To illustrate the technique of augmenting text with short auto-play video, I asked JoAnn Hackos to perform 25 random steps. Here are the text version of the steps together with the video we made while she performed them.
Step One: Hold a clapperboard up to the camera and clap it sharply.
Step Two: Open sewing kit. Remove thread and scissors. Place on desk beside sewing kit.
Step Three: Set timer to 10 seconds. Press start.
Step Four: Open pencil box. Remove pink pen.
Step Five: Open package of highlighters. Remove purple highlighter.
Step Six: Place horse and penguin opposite each other. Give them names.
Step Seven: Remove the cup hooks from packaging. Arrange neatly on desk.
Step Eight: Use level to determine if the desk is level.
Step Nine: Measure the length of the chain.
Step Ten: Open USB Power Adapter box. Determine if there is anything inside.
Step Eleven: Balance the paintbrush on one finger.
Step Twelve: Use the meter to determine if the battery has a charge.
Step Thirteen: Hold this item over your head and ask if anyone remembers the capacity of data it holds.
Step Fourteen: Fold this hex wrench up properly.
Step Fifteen: Open this and place the contents on the desk beside it.
Step Sixteen: Unfold this and tell the camera what is its shape.
Step Seventeen: Replace the flat head with the Philips head.
Step Eighteen: Remove a trap from the packaging. Balance it upright on one end.
Step Nineteen: Remove screwdrivers from case and arrange neatly on desk beside empty case.
Step Twenty: Sharpen this pencil.
Step Twenty-One: Tear off a four-inch piece of tape and use it to tape this to the desk.
Step Twenty-Two: Remove the nut and washer and place all three pieces neatly on the desk.
Step Twenty-Three: Draw an angle on a piece of paper and use this to measure it. Record it on the paper.
Step Twenty-Four: Open this. Remove three bits. Place them neatly on the table.
Step Twenty-Five: Open checkerboard. Separate black and white pieces as shown.
